Pam & Tommy: Is Andersson being exploited all over again?

A mere few weeks back the anticipated series “Pam & Tommy'', starring Lily James and Sebastian Stan, aired on Hulu and Disney+. The eight-episode mini series has already sparked a controversy with its existence.

The series focuses on the events revolving Pamela Andersson and Tommy Lee’s stolen sex tape and that period of their lives. Some are saying that Pamela was forced to take the biggest blow from this scandal, when the damage was initially aimed at Tommy Lee. The Mötley Crüe drummer had failed to pay his electrician and as an act of revenge, the contractor stole a safe containing, among other things, the world renowned tape off of the newlyweds’ property. Due to the wide and vast spread of the internet during the nineties, the knowledge of the couple’s tape could not be contained. While Lee was celebrated by his peers for having “scored” the Baywatch babe, Pamela was accused of attempting to make profits from the tape. Furthermore, through the legal actions taken to prevent further spreading of the tape and damage to the actress’ career, Andersson, yet again, became a victim of domestic abuse. Despite the series only visualizing small segments of their relationship, they have done so without consultation from Pamela herself. Some claim that the show has forcefully opened up old wounds of hers and emphasized a scandal that had a permanent impact on Andersson’s career already in the nineties.

Nevertheless, what was most captivating about this series was the actors Lily James and Sebastian Stans’s transformation into the celebrity couple. For the role of Tommy Lee, Stan would spend 2 hours daily applying identical tattoos to that of Tommy Lee’s and he even learnt the most challenging drum skills to remain authentic. And despite sharing few to no similar physical characteristics with Andersson, James manages to captivate Pamela’s essence fully. Lily even revealed in a press interview that the contacts she wore for the role was initially meant for her role as Cinderella. She sure has come a long way from the Disney princess she once played.
